Chasing the Needles

In instrument flight training, one of the most common mistakes students make is called chasing the needles. It happens when a pilot reacts to every small movement on the instruments instead of understanding what the airplane is actually doing.

Every fluctuation feels urgent. Every deviation demands correction. Before long, the pilot is no longer flying with intention. They are simply reacting to the last thing they saw. Instead of anticipating where the aircraft is going, they are constantly behind it.

Life works the same way.

We often find ourselves chasing needles, reacting to emotions, bank balances, approval, timelines, opinions, and short-term results. A bad day feels like failure. A dip in numbers feels like danger. A moment of doubt feels like everything is coming apart.

But just like in the cockpit, those reactions can lead us in the wrong direction.
